Web Makes Police Candor Critical

The decision this week by Boston police and the Suffolk district attorney to make the video of the Usaamah Rahim shooting public was a dramatic reversal of the long-standing practice of keeping such evidence under wraps, until a public trial or other event. A major force behind this change — as it has been with so many professions — is the Internet. Law enforcement officials have always been slow to change, but even they are beginning to recognize that with this new technology, and the 24/7 news cycle it creates, change is not an option — it is a necessity.
