Topics and Speakers

What's New in 2015 – A Review of New Illinois Employment Laws and Recent Court Decisions

Phil Schreiber and Jen Froehlich will review the Illinois employment laws that became effective January 1, 2015, including the Job Opportunities for Qualified Applicants Act (also known as Ban the Box) and amendments to the Wage Payment and Collection Act and Human Rights Act. They will also discuss recent court decisions involving cases brought against employers by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and what they mean moving forward.

An Update on Whistleblower Protection Claims

Increased legislation and agency focus have resulted in the continued rise of all types of whistleblower and retaliation claims. Rob Vyverberg will provide a legal update on existing whistleblower protections under Illinois and federal law, including the elements of proof required for such claims. He will also address various methods by which employers can prevent whistleblower and retaliation claims and respond to complaints raised by employees.

Key NLRB Issues Affecting Employers in 2015

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has continued to advance a strong pro-union, pro-employee agenda. "Quickie elections," union organizing of "micro-units," expanded use of employer email systems and expansion of traditional "joint employer" rules are realities that employers will have to face in 2015. Ken Jenero will review these important changes, what they mean for your company and how to deal with them most effectively.
