Energy Project Development

As the desire for alternative energy grows and reliance on fossil fuels decreases, a new wave of energy projects will be needed to provide the necessary infrastructure, creating unprecedented opportunities for project development. President Obama has pushed clean energy to the front of his agenda, resulting in a surge of economic stimulus funding, extended and expanded tax incentives, and state drivers, such as Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPSs).

Holland & Knight's Environmental and Energy Teams understand the myriad of legal issues that energy development projects require, including due diligence, business law matters, real estate transactions, and land use and environmental permitting. The development of renewable energy facilities often provides re-use opportunities for brownfields and other contaminated sites. These alternative technologies can also provide companies with innovative ways to manage existing operations. We also provide our clients with assistance related to renewable energy tax credits, construction contract negotiation and drafting, and intellectual property protection and defense. Our experience includes structuring agreements and developing energy projects for Indian tribes, and performing federal appropriations and lobbying work for renewable energy projects on behalf of businesses and government entities.
