ATF Addresses Flavored Wine Labeling Concerns

November 22, 2000

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has issued a Final Ruling concerning the labeling of flavored wine and other specialty wine products. These labels may not employ, among other things, geographic distinctive designations or varietal designations. References on these labels to brand name, product name, or fanciful name must be to standard grape wines only. The announced purpose of these prohibitions is to protect consumers from being misled about the identity of the products they purchase.
