On July 26, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Center for
Medicare and Medicaid Services released a proposed rule that would implement key
provisions of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. Called the MegaReg, it
sets rules for the new Medicare Advantage program as well as for the new
Medicare prescription drug benefit set to take effect in 2006. Copies of the
MegaReg are available at these CMS Web site addresses:

Holland & Knight’s National Health Law Team assisted legislators in drafting
many sections of the MMA, including those addressed to health plans, chronic
care organizations and preferred provider organizations. As part of our
continuing involvement in the implementation of the MMA, we will update you over
the next several weeks on key provisions of the proposed rules through a series
of topical analyses called “The MMA MegaReg Under a Microscope.”
