With the expansion of U.S. contingency operations in Afghanistan, the role of private security contractors (PSC) has become central to reconstruction and humanitarian efforts in that country. As the role of PSCs grow, the federal government is poised to impose much greater oversight of security services through the work of inspectors general at a number of key agencies, including the Department of Defense, the Department of State, and the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. What are the roles of these federal officials? And what steps should security companies take to stay on the right side of the law?
