U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell to Join Holland & Knight
January 6, 2005
Washington, D.C. – Holland & Knight LLP announced today that retired U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-CO) will join the firm’s Government
Section as a Senior Policy Advisor working out of its Washington, D.C., office.
A champion for Native Americans for nearly two decades on Capitol Hill, Campbell
will also serve as a member of the firm’s Indian Law Practice Group.
Campbell served in the United States Senate from 1992-2004 and the U.S. House from 1987-1992. He brings an unusually broad variety of interests and
experience to Holland & Knight as he has earned national recognition as an
advocate for military veterans, law enforcement communities, artists, energy
developers, motorcycle enthusiasts, universities, the beverage industry, the
trucking industry along with his renowned work for Native American Indians.
“Senator Campbell cut a unique path through public life in our Nation’s
Capital," said former U.S. Representative Gerry Sikorski (MN), leader of the
firm’s Government Section. "We are proud that Ben has chosen to come to Holland
& Knight. His record of achieving results in Congress for Native Americans and
for Colorado speaks for itself,” said Sikorski. “We’re looking forward to the
leadership Senator Campbell can bring to our clients’ issues as well as his
common sense, ‘can-do’ approach to solving client problems in partnership with
the U.S. Congress and the Bush Administration.”
Campbell joins former colleagues Sikorski and former U.S. Representative Tillie K. Fowler (FL) who joined the firm when retiring from the House of Representatives
in 2001.
Newsweek magazine recognized Campbell as one of 20 “People to watch for
policy and future of the American West." As a Congressman, Campbell sponsored
the legislation to authorize the creation the National Museum of the American
Indian which opened in September 2004. His leadership in Indian, public lands,
energy and natural resources policy helped create, among other accomplishments,
the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison
National Park, and the Colorado Ute Settlement Act Amendments of 2000.
Senator Campbell said he is looking forward to being a part of the Holland &
Knight team, “I am honored to be joining a firm of the stature and worldwide
reputation of Holland & Knight. After 22 years in public service, I’ve seen what
works and what doesn’t in public policy and the team at Holland & Knight has
always impressed me by doing it the right way.”
In the 108th Congress, Campbell served as a senior member of the Senate
Committees on Appropriations, Energy and Natural Resources, Veterans' Affairs,
Environment and Public Works, and Agriculture. He was the first American Indian
in history to chair the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and was the only
American Indian serving in the Senate as he retired.
"Senator Campbell will help our firm's broad base of clients develop
strategies and provide trusted counsel on how best to navigate the public policy
process in Washington," said Jerry Levine, head of the firm's Indian Law
Practice Group. "In particular, Campbell's leadership and vast knowledge on
Native American issues will be invaluable as he helps strengthen and grow our
firm’s Indian Law Group."
Campbell is one of 44 Chiefs of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. Before serving
in the U.S. House, he served two terms in the Colorado General Assembly.
Campbell received a B.A. degree in physical education and fine arts from San
Jose University in 1957. Before entering college, Campbell served in the U.S.
Air Force from 1951-53, stationed in Korea, where he attained the rank of Airman
2nd Class. He holds a 7th degree black belt in judo and was a U.S. and Olympic
judo champion in the 1960s.
