Former in-house general counsel enhances firm’s Transportation team

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Holland & Knight LLP continues to expand its Litigation practice, announcing today that Michael A. Abel has joined the firm as a partner in the Jacksonville, Fla. office.

Abel brings considerable experience in complex litigation matters, including resolution of major liability claims; commercial litigation and disputes arising out of contractual relationships; high-visibility or high-value personal injury and wrongful death claims (including punitive damage claims); mass tort litigation, especially large-scale class action suits, toxic tort suits and environmental litigation; and governmental investigations, including allegations of fraud or crimes. He also will be working closely with the Transportation team to serve the firm’s transportation clients.

“Mike’s breadth and depth of litigation experience will greatly enhance our ability to provide our clients with the highest level of insight and advice,” said Lawrence Hamilton, Holland & Knight’s North Florida Litigation Practice Group Leader. “His service as in-house counsel to two public companies brings a unique perspective to the firm. We look forward to integrating his expertise with the talents of our other top-notch lawyers.”

Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Abel served as vice president and assistant general counsel with Pacer International, Inc., following his tenure as general counsel-litigation for CSX Transportation.

Abel is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh and Fourth Circuits. He is a member of the Florida Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. Abel earned his bachelor’s degree with distinction at the University of Virginia in 1988, and received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1991.
