Construction: Alert - January 30, 2012

For almost 50 years, lessors have had the ability to limit their liability for liens that arose from improvements to the leasehold made by a lessee. However, in the most recent legislative session, the Florida Legislature enacted revisions to Florida Statute § 713.10 that provide a potential pitfall for lessors by inserting a provision that may allow a contractor to lien the lessor's interest even where there is a recorded document advising of the limitation of liens.

Holland & Knight Attorney Anthony C. Alfonso Earns LEED Accreditation from the U.S. Green Building Council

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Holland & Knight is pleased to announce that Anthony C. Alfonso, an associate in the firm's Fort Lauderdale office, has earned accreditation from the U.S. Green Building Council, and is now a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP) effective Feb. 7, 2009. He is the fourth Holland & Knight attorney to earn LEED accreditation.

Alfonso is now capable of advising and assisting Holland & Knight clients on the LEED certification process, which is designed to meet the highest green building and performance measures. He will be listed on the Green Building Certification Institute's LEED AP Directory under the "Legal" area of practice where there are less than 100 attorneys nationwide who are certified LEED APs.

LEED APs have the professional knowledge and ability to help facilitate the LEED certification process for green and sustainable building. The LEED® Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED APs complete a rigorous certification process that includes a final exam.

Alfonso is in the firm's real estate practice group and focuses on commercial real estate. He is experienced in representing developers, lenders and borrowers in closing a variety of commercial real estate transactions. He received his B.A., summa cum laude in Political Science from the Florida International University and his J.D. magna cum laude from Florida State University College of Law.
