Holland & Knight Attorney Rachel Blechman Elected Chair of the Florida Humanities Council Board

MIAMI – October 7, 2009 – Holland & Knight is pleased to announce that Rachel Blechman, a retired senior partner in the firm’s Miami office, was elected to Chair of the Florida Humanities Council (FHC) Board. The board serves as the governing body of the FHC and is comprised of 25 members, with six members appointed by the Governor.
Blechman was elected at FHC's September meeting by the organization’s Board of Directors to a two-year term as chair. Previously, she has served as vice chair. As chair, Blechman will preside as the executive officer of the board, and generally direct the board’s activities.
FHC is the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and provides grants for public humanities programs and resources. It also creates and coordinates workshops for K-12 teachers, conducts cultural heritage tours, operates a humanities speakers bureau and partners with libraries to provide family literacy programs. FHC funding comes from the National Endowment for the Humanities and private donations.
Blechman, a 25-year member of the corporate department in the firm's Miami office, has worked with a variety of education and business clients, including public and private universities, education service providers, foundations, hospitals, banks, manufacturers, real estate companies and telecommunications providers. She is a former chair of the Board of Friends of WLRN public radio and television in Miami, and the immediate past president of the Funding Arts Network, a philanthropic giving circle that supports the arts in Miami Dade County through a competitive grant process.
Blechman currently serves on the Taskforce for the Visual and Performing Arts constituted by the Miami-Dade County Commission to examine ways to maximize the effective use of available resources to support a vibrant cultural life for the residents and visitors to Miami-Dade County. She is also a member of the Miami Planning Committee for the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
