Recognition marks the third time Baron has been named counsel by the House of Representatives for the Constitutional judicial impeachment process.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Alan I. Baron, co-chair of Holland & Knight's Congressional Investigations Team, was named by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr., to serve as Special Counsel in the impeachment inquiry into the conduct of U.S. District Court Judge G. Thomas Porteous. As Special Counsel, Baron will lead the inquiry to determine if allegations concerning Judge Porteous warrant his impeachment. This is the third time Baron has been chosen to serve as counsel in a federal judicial impeachment proceeding - a rare event under the Constitution.
Baron served as Special Impeachment Counsel in 1988 and 1989 in the impeachment proceedings of federal judges Walter Nixon and Alcee Hastings, the last federal judges to be impeached and removed from office. He also served as Minority Chief Counsel to the Senate Government Affairs Committee for the investigation into campaign finance abuses prior to returning to private practice in 1998.
Baron is a partner in Holland & Knight's Washington, D.C. office and a member of the firm's White Collar-Criminal Defense Team. His practice is focused on high profile cases in the federal enforcement defense arena and complex civil litigation. Baron has authored and contributed to several publications on matters relating to his practice. He has been an adjunct professor of law at the University of Maryland Law School. In addition, Baron has served as a legal analyst and commentator for NBC News, with a focus on federal investigations and impeachment.
