For almost 50 years, lessors have had the ability to limit their liability for liens that arose from improvements to the leasehold made by a lessee. However, in the most recent legislative session, the Florida Legislature enacted revisions to Florida Statute § 713.10 that provide a potential pitfall for lessors by inserting a provision that may allow a contractor to lien the lessor's interest even where there is a recorded document advising of the limitation of liens.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently denied an employer’s request for review of a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, which held that tipped employees spending more than 20 percent of their time performing related but non-tipped duties must be paid the full minimum wage for that time, without the tip credit.

Karl J. Lott Joins Holland & Knight's Los Angeles Real Estate Practice

LOS ANGELES – Holland & Knight is pleased to announce that Karl J. Lott has joined the firm's Los Angeles office as Senior Counsel in the firm's West Coast Real Estate Practice. Lott was previously a founding member of the Los Angeles law firm Lamb & Kawakami LLP.

"Karl's real estate experience will deepen and strengthen the capabilities we offer our clients," said Susan Booth, West Coast Real Estate Practice Group Leader. "He has extensive knowledge of a variety of real estate matters that complements not just our West Coast Real Estate Practice, but also the firm's real estate practice, which is the largest of any national law firm."

Lott has a broad-based real estate and business transactional practice, which includes advising clients on entity structures, drafting and negotiating joint venture agreements, and representing buyers and sellers in sales of real estate, borrowers and lenders in real estate financings and workouts, and tenants and landlords in retail, office and industrial leasing matters, including property management. He has also worked with local and state government officials to assist clients in obtaining permits and other entitlements as well as in resolving environmental issues.
