For almost 50 years, lessors have had the ability to limit their liability for liens that arose from improvements to the leasehold made by a lessee. However, in the most recent legislative session, the Florida Legislature enacted revisions to Florida Statute ยง 713.10 that provide a potential pitfall for lessors by inserting a provision that may allow a contractor to lien the lessor's interest even where there is a recorded document advising of the limitation of liens.

Ethics panel dismisses complaint vs. Wiggins

A Daily Report article featured Robert Highsmith who represented a candidate for the Georgia Supreme Court in a complaint that was filed alleging the candidate illegally coordinated with a coalition of business groups on expenditures for his campaign. Highsmith wrote the ethics commission explaining that communication with the coalition took place prior to the his client's announced candidacy. The State Ethics Commission reviewed the complaint and later dismissed it. "The First Amendment was under attack today, and the commission defended and protected it," Highsmith said.
