EPA Now Accepting Proposals for Brownfields Grants

October 27, 2004

Amy L. Edwards- Washington

EPA expects to distribute $100 million in brownfields grants in FY 2005. Eligible organizations need to submit their applications no later than November 12, 2004.

Three types of grants are available:

Assessment grants (up to $200,000 over two years) help applicants to inventory, characterize, assess, and conduct planning and community involvement related to brownfields sites.

Revolving loan fund grants (up to $1 million over five years) help applicants capitalize a revolving loan fund and provide subgrants to carry out cleanup activities at brownfield sites.

Cleanup grants (up to $200,000 over two years) go directly toward the cleanup of contaminated brownfields sites. These grants may now be used to address sites contaminated by either petroleum or hazardous substances or both.

Holland & Knight’s Brownfields Practice Group is experienced with obtaining these types of grants and can assist you in developing a strategy for obtaining the benefits of the available brownfields funding and related redevelopment issues. EPA’s grant proposal guidelines can be found online at http://www.epa.gov/brownfields/applicat.htm#pg. For additional information about the grants process, you can also contact the Office of Brownfields Cleanup and Redevelopment at 202-566-2777.
