TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Curt
Kiser, a partner in the Tallahassee office of Holland & Knight and chairman of
the Board of Trustees of the LeRoy Collins Institute, has recently toured the
state reporting the findings of a major new study Tough Choices: Shaping
Florida’s Future to various media and economic development groups.
The nonpartisan study, conducted for the past
two years by the LeRoy Collins Institute at Florida State University, examined
Florida’s tax and spending policy. It was designed to answer one basic question:
Will Florida’s current tax structure support the needs of future Floridians? The
findings reveal that Florida is headed for a significant budget shortfall in the
next five years unless some changes are made. The research was done by two
respected experts in government spending, Carol Weissert from Florida State
University and David Denslow from University of Florida.
“The study found that net general revenue will
likely grow in the next five years at barely half the rate it has during the
last two years,” said Kiser. “This should be a catalyst for serious discussions
in the Legislature and governor’s
office about how to prepare for the coming budget shortfall.”
