Construction: Alert - October 13, 2008

In a recent decision with broad implications for the construction industry, the Massachusetts Appeals Court has held that general contractors owe a duty to their subcontractors' employees to provide a discrimination-free work environment. Because of the O'Connor decision, general contractors may now face discrimination lawsuits not only from their own employees, but also from employees of other companies at the job site. Discrimination lawsuits brought by non-employees are often outside the protections of commercial insurance policies. Are you covered?

Holland & Knight Partner Homer Duvall Receives Award for Exemplary Community Service From Pinellas County Head Start

TAMPA, Fla. – Homer Duvall, a partner in the Tampa office of Holland & Knight, has received an award for Exemplary Community Service from the Pinellas County Head Start program. The award was presented by Juanita Heinzen, Executive Director of Pinellas County Head Start, at the recent Fifth Annual Appreciation Gala, a joint effort of Clearwater Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. and Pinellas County Head Start.

Duvall, who serves as Real Estate Practice Group Leader for the Tampa office, practices in the areas of real estate, both transactional and litigation, as well as title insurance defense and appellate representation. He has more than 35 years of experience working in and for the title insurance industry and with real estate problems, claims and recovery. Duvall is a frequent speaker on real estate topics and has authored numerous articles on real estate for various real estate and financial publications.
