Protecting Unaccompanied Immigrant and Refugee Children in the United States

Thousands of unaccompanied children are trapped in the neglected U.S. immigration system. They take the risk of crossing the border to escape poverty and hardship, only to be arrested and interrogated. For years they are shuffled from jail to jail and detained with adults waiting to see an immigration judge. Few are lucky to be represented by pro bono attorneys, as in the case of Malik Jarno, an orphan from Guinea represented by Holland & Knight and two other law firms. In this article, Mr. Nugent lists the flaws of the system and calls for the improvement of protecting children who deserve the liberties they set forth to live.
