John Germany Honored by The National Conference of Bar Examiners

John F. Germany- Tampa

Distinguished Holland & Knight partner recognized for his efforts in revolutionizing the Multistate Bar Examination

Tampa – John Germany, one of the original partners of Holland & Knight LLP, was honored in San Francisco Saturday night by the National Conference of Bar Examiners for his many contributions to the Bar.

Thirty years ago the first Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) was given. It was developed by a small group of bar examiners, including Germany, who recognized the need for a standardized bar exam to replace the original essay exam that varied in difficulty and approach from state to state. Their efforts revolutionized the Bar, resulting in the more objective MBE, which is now professionally developed and graded in order to determine the minimum competency of those tested. It is this standout achievement for which John Germany, a former Chair of the organization, is being honored.

This honor is among several presented to Germany throughout his remarkable career, including an award from the University of South Florida, which presented him its Medallion for Community Service and also Stetson University, which granted him an honorary Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. In 2001 the Trial Lawyers Section of the Hillsborough County Bar Association presented Germany with the Herbert G. Goldburg Memorial Award, marking his many contributions and fairness to all lawyers.

Germany's commitment to the Tampa community was recognized in 1999 by the Tampa City Council when they renamed the downtown library the John Germany Public Library. He received his B.A. with honors in 1944 from the University of Florida and his LL.B. in 1950 from Harvard Law School.

The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) is a not-for-profit corporation committed to developing, applying and maintaining standards of education and character for eligibility for admission to the practice of law.
