February 18, 2005

James D. "J.D." Smeallie- Boston

BOSTON – The Boston office of Holland & Knight LLP is being recognized for its continued dedication to public service. On March 4, the Boston office will be presented with the Pro Bono Award for Law Firms at the annual Access to Justice Awards Luncheon, co-presented by the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.

Each year the award is given to a firm with two or more lawyers whose pro bono activities are particularly noteworthy in relation to the firm’s size and has performed significant or meaningful pro bono activity or has been particularly instrumental in developing, implementing and/or supporting a pro bono program or pro bono services within Massachusetts.

James Smeallie, of Holland & Knight’s Boston office, and David Correira, who practices from the firm’s Boston and Providence offices, are pro bono supervising partners for their locations. Smeallie and Correira work with other lawyers at Holland & Knight dedicated to pro bono matters in Massachusetts and its surrounding areas.

In addition, Tara Myslinski, an associate in the firm’s Boston office, will receive one of The Legal Aid Society of New York’s 2004 Pro Bono awards during a ceremony in New York City on March 2. Myslinski was nominated for the award for accepting a case from The Legal Aid Society of New York. The case involved a citizen of Trinidad, who had lived in the United States most of their life, seeking freedom from imprisonment.

“The Boston office is honored to be presented with these awards. They recognize an important tradition we have at our firm and in the Boston office of providing representation to those that could otherwise not afford it. Our success in the pro bono community is evident through the high participation from our lawyers and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this office,” Mark Michalowski, executive partner of the firm’s Boston office said.

About Holland & Knight’s Pro Bono Work: Holland & Knight’s Community Services Team was created in 1990 as a full-time pro bono practice group and works with hundreds of lawyers within the firm to promote the firm’s commitment and belief in serving its communities and providing justice for all people in need. Holland & Knight and the CST has earned a national reputation for a wide range of pro bono work.
