Construction: Alert - January 30, 2012

For almost 50 years, lessors have had the ability to limit their liability for liens that arose from improvements to the leasehold made by a lessee. However, in the most recent legislative session, the Florida Legislature enacted revisions to Florida Statute § 713.10 that provide a potential pitfall for lessors by inserting a provision that may allow a contractor to lien the lessor's interest even where there is a recorded document advising of the limitation of liens.

Richard Stephens Named Practice Group Leader at Holland & Knight

MIAMI – Holland & Knight LLP announced today that partner Richard “Rick” Stephens has been named National Practice Group Leader for Public Finance, a practice area within the firm’s Business Law Section. The public finance practice is staffed with more than 30 lawyers across the country who devote all or a substantial portion of their practice to matters involving public finance, derivatives and structured financial products.

Stephens, of the firm’s Lakeland, Fla. office, devotes his time to tax-exempt financings and a diverse corporate practice. Specifically, he has experience in municipal and industrial development financings, including airports, public power, solid waste, convention centers and hospitals, derivative transactions including swaps, caps and collars, large corporate financings, general contract drafting, and acquisitions and mergers.

Partner Steven Sonberg, who chairs the Business Law Section at Holland & Knight, is enthusiastic about the appointment. “Rick has more than 30 years of experience in public finance and brings strong leadership skills and a wealth of knowledge to this position.”

“Our primary goal will be strengthening our core services and providing them at competitive prices,” Stephens said.

Stephens received his B.S. in 1969 from the University of Rochester and his J.D., with high honors, in 1972 from the University of Florida College of Law, graduating first in this class.
