Government Contracts: Alert - November 12, 2009

On November 30, 2009, the Supreme Court will hear oral argument in Graham County Soil & Water Conservation District v. United States ex rel. Wilson, a qui tam action brought under the False Claims Act (FCA) and appealed from a Fourth Circuit decision. The Court will use the case to resolve a split among the circuits over the scope of the FCA's "public disclosure" bar. A decision affirming the Fourth Circuit could increase qui tam litigation against any organization that does business with, or receives federal money through, federal, state and local governmental entities – and would further expand the reach of the FCA to any state or local program involving the use of federal funds.

Environment: Alert - November 18, 2009

Environmental justice – a mix of environmental and civil rights law and policy – is receiving in­creased attention in the Obama Administration, bringing with it challenges and opportunities for municipalities, facilities and others operating in low-income and minority communities. This alert discusses various aspects of environmental justice and the implications for the Obama Administration. Holland & Knight Partner Stuart Mendelsohn Installed As Chairman of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce

McLean, VA – Holland & Knight is pleased to announce that Stuart Mendelsohn, a partner in the firm’s Northern Virginia office, was installed as Chairman of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce on June 17 at the organization’s Annual Chairman’s Luncheon and Blue Diamond Awards.

Mendelsohn has served on the board of the Chamber since 1991 and on its Executive Committee for 10 of those years. He took a hiatus from the Executive Committee during his eight years in elected office on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Mendelsohn is the second Holland & Knight attorney to serve as Chairman; Dick Duvall, also a partner in the firm's Northern Virginia office, and head of the Government Contracts practice has served as past Chairman of the Chamber.

Mendelsohn's practice concentrates on real estate, land use, government affairs and corporate law. His clients include a broad range of corporations, non-profit organizations, builders and developers. In addition to his eight years on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, he also spent two years as vice Chairman of the Fairfax County School Board and also served on a number of state and regional transportation commissions, land use committees and councils, including the Tysons Corner Land Use Task Force.
