Overview
Maria T. Currier is a partner and co-chair of Holland & Knight's National Healthcare Transactions Practice Group. She also is a co-leader of the firm's Healthcare & Life Sciences Industry Team. She has more than 38 years of experience serving clients in the healthcare industry and is Board Certified in Health Law as recognized by The Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization and Education. Her healthcare practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, commercial transactions, healthcare regulatory matters, fraud and abuse, and international business ventures for healthcare clients.
Ms. Currier has counseled clients on: clinical integration; federal healthcare reform; new delivery models, including ACOs; Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement and regulatory issues; federal and state fraud and abuse matters; Stark-related matters; and physician incentive arrangements. She has served as counsel to national hospitals and health systems, large medical groups, ambulatory surgery centers, integrated health systems, physician management companies, post-acute care providers, skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and academic medical centers.
Relevant Experience
- Represents national hospital system, advising on complex joint ventures and national physician clinical integration strategies
- Handles acquisitions and sales of physician practices, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies and other healthcare providers
- Counsels clients on federal and Florida fraud and abuse, Stark-related matters, corporate compliance plans, False Claims Act compliance and physician incentive arrangements
- Serves as outside general counsel for the South Florida Hospital & Healthcare Association
- Represented the Puerto Rico Department of Health in Medicare and Medicaid regulatory matters
- Represented large distributor of medical supplies and equipment to establish foreign operations in Latin America
- Represented U.S. healthcare technology companies in establishing distribution and sales agreements throughout Latin America
- Analyzed and developed international opportunities for U.S. healthcare clients in the emerging Latin American healthcare markets
- Experienced in forming complex integrated healthcare delivery systems
- Involved in managed care negotiations and contracting, including risk-sharing and capitation arrangements
