Alan I. Baron is co-chair of the Congressional Investigations Team and a member of the White Collar-Criminal Defense Team at Holland & Knight. His practice is focused on high profile cases in the federal enforcement defense arena, complex civil litigation and government relations.

Prior to returning to private practice in 1998, Mr. Baron served as Minority Chief Counsel to the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee for the investigation into campaign finance abuses. Mr. Baron was appointed to that position by Senator John Glenn, ranking Minority Member.

Following law school, Mr. Baron clerked for the Honorable Roszel C. Thomsen, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. He then served as an Assistant United States Attorney for Maryland from 1967 to 1970 where he successfully prosecuted a variety of high-profile cases involving bribery and organized crime.

In 1970, Mr. Baron entered private practice where he focused on defending white collar crime prosecutions, litigating complex civil cases, and serving as special counsel in public proceedings. His private representations in criminal defense matters have included the successful defense of L. Patrick Gray III, former Director of the FBI, who was indicted for allegedly authorizing unlawful FBI break-ins. His representations of individuals and corporations in civil and criminal matters have included mail fraud, bid-rigging, health-care fraud, and "whistleblower" claims, among others. He also successfully defended ABC News in a series of civil cases involving surreptitious electronic eavesdropping.

From 1987 to 1989, Mr. Baron served as Special Impeachment Counsel to the United States House of Representatives in proceedings which resulted in the impeachment, conviction, and ultimate removal from office of federal judges Alcee Hastings and Walter Nixon. In 1991, he was appointed as Special Counsel by the Governor of Rhode Island to investigate the financial collapse of Rhode Island's privately-insured credit unions. In 1993, he was appointed as Special Counsel to the Anne Arundel County School Board in Maryland to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct by high school teachers and students which gained national attention.

Mr. Baron has authored and contributed to several publications on matters relating to his practice. He has been an adjunct professor of law at the University of Maryland Law School. Mr. Baron has also served as a legal analyst and commentator for NBC News, with a focus on federal investigations and impeachment.
