Elias Matsakis’ practice transcends multiple legal disciplines and he leads teams of Holland & Knight attorneys in complex corporate finance and merger and acquisition transactions for both business and not-for-profit entities in the health care, broadcast, computer, hospitality, real estate, converging media and finance industries. Mr. Matsakis is retained for his judgment and for his capability to successfully negotiate and complete complex transactions that require coordination of legal specialists in multiple disciplines. The breadth and sophistication of the legal matters handled has enabled Mr. Matsakis to help clients manage regulatory and technological change and to attract the requisite capital to support their growth.

Mr. Matsakis has extensive experience in counseling corporate clients on bankruptcy-related matters and complex corporate litigation. Most recently, for example he managed the major advertising settlement program involving over 500 large corporate advertisers on behalf of a large urban newspaper that self reported inflated circulation. He also has represented numerous entities in their corporate restructurings both within and outside of formal bankruptcy proceedings.

In the health care industry, Mr. Matsakis has counseled public and not-for-profit hospital boards and strategic planning officers on a variety of compliance and development matters. He developed the prototype manual for the nation’s leading hospital management firm and has served as lead counsel in a variety of hospital physician affiliations and integrated delivery systems. Additionally, he regularly counsels physician groups and hospitals on Medicare compliance and managed care issues.

Mr. Matsakis has assisted large not-for-profit organizations in their corporate governance and conflict policies. Mr. Matsakis serves as general counsel for one of the nation's largest on line educational content providers. In the broadcast industry, he has served as lead counsel on numerous radio station acquisitions and divestitures.

In the hospitality industry, he served as the lead attorney for the development of the Marina City hotel and commercial areas in Chicago, Ill., the Hard Rock Hotel and a variety of other hotel joint ventures and developments throughout the United States. Mr. Matsakis has structured equity investments on behalf of pension investors and developers in a variety of mixed use real estate developments and commercial real estate transactions.

Mr. Matsakis helped structure the nation’s first rated lease receivable backed financing and has had substantial experience in the real estate syndication, credit enhancement, equipment and vehicle finance and other special purpose financing vehicles.

Mr. Matsakis' leadership abilities are recognized both within the firm and in his community. Mr Matsakis serves as the Executive Partner of the firm's Chicago office and is a member of its Directors Committee. He currently serves on the Finance committee of the Northfield Township District 225 High School Board, serving nearly 5,000 students at annual budget of approximately $ 90 million.
