Heather A. Calhoun is a civil trial attorney in the Litigation Section. She practices in the areas of education, employment, and business litigation as well as trust and estate matters. Ms. Calhoun is a member of the firm's Education Team.
Ms. Calhoun's specialty in education law includes representing colleges and universities in academic, student, faculty, and employment affairs. Ms. Calhoun also devotes a portion of her practice to employment law, representing clients before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and in state and federal courts for claims involving discrimination, breach of contract, employment related torts, and employment affairs. Ms. Calhoun handles a variety of litigation work involving contract, insurance, real estate, and employment issues for a wide array of clients. Ms. Calhoun also has litigation experience in the area of government representation, having successfully defended numerous election contests. Ms. Calhoun's appellate experience includes successfully defending numerous appeals to the Supreme Court of Georgia as well as representing clients before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Ms. Calhoun also devotes a portion of her practice to probate administration and trust & estate litigation when necessary. Specializing in the representation of national nonprofit organizations, Ms. Calhoun maximizes the value of bequests, accelerates the distribution of cash and assets, and produces major gift and planned giving opportunities. Ms. Calhoun's pro bono work includes serving as Advisory Counsel to the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence and participating in the Appleseed Foundation Project on the examination of parental involvement following the imposition of the No Child Left Behind Act.
Ms. Calhoun serves as the current editor of the Holland & Knight Education Newsletter and Alerts. She is a member of Holland & Knight's Asian Pacific Islander Affinity Group as well as the Women's Initiative Group. Ms. Calhoun is a member of the State Bar of Georgia's Young Lawyer Division and its Ethics and Professionalism Committee. Ms. Calhoun further serves as a member of the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association and the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association.
Ms. Calhoun graduated in the top 3 percent of her class from Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law and served as administrative editor of the Mercer Law Review. Ms. Calhoun also competed on the Family Law Moot Court Team, which won "Best Brief," and represented Mercer at the National Moot Court Competition.
