Shannon D. Sentman, LEED AP, is a transactional attorney practicing primarily in the area of commercial real estate, with an emphasis on sustainable development.
Mr. Sentman’s traditional real estate practice includes structuring, documenting and closing various commercial transactions. His sustainable development practice includes: (i) working with municipalities, developers, designers and contractors on issues related to green-building legislation, including representation of the first private projects to face the D.C. Green Building Act of 2006; (ii) counseling developers on structuring green projects, including consideration of higher first costs, available incentives and project team coordination; and (iii) drafting contracts and provisions to address green-specific issues and risks.
In serving clients, Mr. Sentman’s legal skills are complemented by both his business-side knowledge of the real estate industry and his knowledge of sustainable development, especially as it relates to projects seeking LEED certification. His business-side knowledge is derived from experience in the field and the education received through the Johns Hopkins University, Masters in Real Estate Development program. For clients, this knowledge translates to an ability to focus on the pro-forma driving terms in legal documents.
As the 7th attorney in the nation to earn the LEED Accredited Professional designation, Mr. Sentman regularly speaks on the topic of sustainable development and is often interviewed as a legal expert.
