Dr. Sunwoo Lee is the Washington, DC Patent Practice Leader and a member of the Intellectual Property Practice Group of the Litigation Section of Holland & Knight LLP. He counsels domestic and foreign clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies in all aspects of intellectual property law. His practice includes trademark, trade secrets and patent litigation, counseling, patentability and non-infringement opinions, due diligence, licensing and agreement work.
His litigation experience spans federal district courts as well as Section 337 intellectual property investigations before the International Trade Commission. He has managed various patent infringement cases in representing one-man, small and large companies as both plaintiff and defendant. Dr. Lee also represents top-name international entertainment entities in trademark disputes.
Dr. Lee assists global high-tech manufacturing companies in mining intellectual property resources both internally and externally. He represents companies in managing trade secrets, trademarks and patents. Further, Dr. Lee counsels his clients on building strategic intellectual property portfolios of trade secrets, trademarks and patents.
He has a comprehensive background and technical expertise in the areas of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and materials science, including semiconductor, display, multimedia, telecommunication and automobile technologies. Dr. Lee prosecutes, counsels and litigates in the technologies of semiconductor circuitry and fabrication process, flat panel display devices, light emitting diodes, laser diodes, cellular telephonic equipment/system and telecommunication protocols including GSM and CDMA, optical disc structures including the Blu-ray Discs, digital signal processing, medical devices such as ultrasound imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, and automobiles. He also represents international entertainment entities in intellectual property litigation in federal district courts.
Dr. Lee previously worked as a technical consultant to the Intellectual Property Law Department of a major Asian law firm where he provided technical advice for trademark and patent prosecution and litigation. Prior to that, he was a senior scientist/manager at the Central Research & Development Center of Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd., specializing in magnetic and electronic thin film devices. Dr. Lee has also served as an assistant professor in the Center for Solid State Science & Technology, Department of Physics, at Syracuse University, and was a visiting scientist at IBM Research Center in Endicott, NY.
As a scientist, Dr. Lee published many articles on thin film devices in several prestigious scientific journals. He is a frequent guest speaker to the Asian electronics industry, academic and professional associations. Recently, Dr. Lee was the keynote speaker at the Annual Korean American Scientists and Engineers Association Conference. He also contributes articles to various Korean newspapers and publications on U.S. intellectual property practice.
