Biotech Vision Blurs as Other Firms Eye Briger Land

When Scripps Research Institute was established in Palm Beach County, Fla., the idea behind it was that high-end jobs would create a "biotech city." Despite this, the biotech city has yet to form and this is putting pressure on landowners to ease restrictions on the adjacent Briger tract in Palm Beach Gardens. Now, the city and county want to approve millions of dollars in corporate incentives to lure a non-biotech company to Briger.

"If they have a Fortune 500 company plant its headquarters in Palm Beach County, those are good, quality jobs," said attorney Ron Klein. "I'm not discouraging that. but certainly we have no seen the benefit of the investment we would have liked to have seen."
