Holland & Knight's Real Estate Finance, Loan Restructuring Practice Grows in New York

New York (April 8, 2014) - Kathleen M. Furey has joined the New York office of Holland & Knight as partner focusing on real estate finance and loan restructuring, primarily in the affordable housing area. Ms. Furey, who has more than 30 years of experience in real estate law, represents both lenders and developers. Also joining the firm is Kevin C. George as a senior counsel in the same group.

"Kathleen brings a wealth of knowledge concerning numerous affordable housing transactions," said James McDermott, leader of the firm's Business Section. "Her work representing lenders in these matters complements our existing bench strength.  Affordable housing programs are often quite complex, and Kathleen knows how to work through them effectively for our clients."

Ms. Furey has closed construction loans involving coordination of multiple levels of financing combined with tax credit proceeds and subsidy funds from city, state and federal agencies. Her representation of lenders includes major national banks, which have been plagued in recent years with loan workouts, restructuring and foreclosures. Her affordable housing transactions have featured multifamily revenue bonds, low-income housing tax credits, new markets tax credits, GO Zone tax credits and historic tax credits.

"I have worked with members of the firm's affordable housing practice on transactions for several years now, and I have been impressed with their knowledge of these complex transactions, which always involve multiple layers of financing."

Mr. George also brings extensive experience in commercial loan transactions to Holland & Knight. He has handled a variety of financings including letters of credit-enhanced bonds, conduit loans, purchase money financings and affordable housing tax credit matters. Mr. George has worked on the financing and disposition of shopping center properties as well as leasing and subleasing on behalf of landlords and tenants.

Ms. Furey earned her B.A. degree from Hofstra University and her J.D. degree from Hofstra University School of Law. She was previously a partner at Robinson & Cole.  Mr. George, who was counsel at Robinson & Cole, received a B.S. degree summa cum laude from Northeastern University and a J.D. degree from St. John's University School of Law where he was a member of the Law Review.
