When an environmental disaster strikes, attorneys should be well equipped to respond to their clients needs. Litigation Attorney Deborah Barnard says that depending on the nature of what has happened, evidence can be easily destroyed. However, she says where there's an ability to control the preservation of evidence, it should be exercised.

Ms. Barnard also states that attorneys should also help clients manage the public relations response. While some aspects of PR response should be left to the experts, attorneys can help craft messages.

"I don’t think that’s the primary role for the attorney, but an attorney can be supportive of whatever PR efforts are being made on behalf of the client," she said.
