Mia McKown and Karen Walker Receive Joy Aukema Taps Children’s Advocate of the Year Award

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 11, 2015) – Holland & Knight partners Mia McKown and Karen Walker were honored by Legal Services of North Florida with the Joy Aukema Taps Children's Advocate of the Year Award at the annual Law Day reception held at the University Center Club on May 5.

The reception recognized attorneys from the 2nd Judicial Circuit for their dedication to providing pro bono legal services to those who cannot afford representation in cases involving family law, housing, public benefits, employment, education and healthcare issues. Ms. McKown and Ms. Walker have spent the past year and a half serving as the attorneys ad litem to two teenage girls who are sisters. They were presented their awards by U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham.

Legal Services of North Florida provides legal services to low-income and elderly persons in central and western counties in the Florida Panhandle. The organization is funded by the Legal Services Corporation, a private, not-for-profit corporation created by an Act of Congress to ensure low-income people have equal access to the courts nationwide.
