Scepticism over UK IP Minister's Vow That Plain Packaging Won’t Go Beyond Tobacco

The UK Members of Parliament have voted to approve legislation that allows plain packaging on tobacco products. The UK minister of intellectual property assured the public that there are no plans to extend the regime to other products, but not everyone was convinced that other sectors would not be targeted.

"The notion that plain packaging can be limited to tobacco alone strikes me as misguided, if not naïve," said Trademark Attorney Paul Kilmer. "There are many groups that are simply awaiting decisions of the WTO and EU Commission regarding the plain packaging for tobacco products before launching drives to institute plain and highly standardised packaging for other goods. It is simply a matter of time."
