Louis A. Santiago is a partner in Holland & Knight's Portland office. When facing government investigations or commercial disputes, large and small businesses alike turn to Mr. Santiago to defend their interests and advance their business objectives. The primary focus of Mr. Santiago's practice is commercial, business tort, employment and real estate dispute resolution. The industries he serves include manufacturing, transportation, retail, real estate, hospitality, title insurance, financial services, food and beverage, and security.

In addition to alternative dispute resolution (mediation and arbitration), Mr. Santiago is an experienced jury and non-jury trial attorney. He has served as lead counsel on high profile, multi-state cases, as well as more conventional cases filed in federal and state courts in Oregon, Washington and other Western states. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Santiago was employed as a manufacturing engineer for Westinghouse Electric Company and served as an attorney with the Office of Counsel, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His representative engagements include:

  • lead counsel: negotiated favorable settlement of unfair competition and misappropriation of trade secret claims filed against a major fuel cell manufacturer by another manufacturer
  • lead counsel: defended a national equipment manufacturer against a patent assignment rescission action, an assignment critical to a pending sale of the company
  • lead counsel: defended a national snack food manufacturer in a significant food contamination case in Oregon
  • lead counsel: defended a national hotel chain in franchise litigation filed in the U.S. District Court of Oregon by a multi-property owner/franchisee
  • lead counsel: defended national title insurance companies in numerous title insurance and escrow cases filed in Oregon and Washington state courts
  • settlement counsel: prosecuted claims and negotiated favorable settlement for a California-based lender in a receivership and foreclosure action commenced by the lender against the owner of a high-rise hotel in Tacoma, Wash.
  • directed local counsel: prosecuted claims and negotiated favorable settlement in unfair competition action against a competitor that was filed in Idaho state court by a global manufacturer and distributor of medical and surgical supplies and technologies
  • lead counsel: represented a national hotel chain in a major personal injury action filed in Oregon state court by a hotel visitor
  • lead counsel: managed international test publishing client's response to a major EEOC investigation of its test design and validation practices
  • compliance counsel: managed compliance by national security industry client to consent decree entered in a major EEOC investigation
