On December 12, 2012, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services launched a new online initiative called "Mobile Devices: Know the RISKS. Take the STEPS. PROTECT and SECURE Health Information." The program is designed to educate the health industry regarding protection of patient information stored in mobile devices.  A number of videos, articles, and "frequently asked questions" are available at www.HealthIT.gov/mobiledevices.  The website also, however, includes disclaimers indicating that adhering to the tips and guidance provided does not guarantee compliance with all relevant laws.  Leon Rodriguez, the director of the HHS Office for Civil Rights, which enforces HIPAA's Privacy and Security Rules, stated, "This education effort and new online resource give health care providers common sense tools to help prevent their patients' health information from falling into the wrong hands."
