The Federal Aviation Administration recently published a memo that encourages law enforcement to identify individuals flying Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), also known as drones, without permission from the agency. Public Policy attorney Jennifer Nowak says this memo signifies that the technology got ahead of the rulemaking, which often happens. Many in the industry are arguing that this responsibility should not fall to the police.
"Local governments are not familiar with the [unmanned aircraft system] drone regulation," says Nowak. "You could run into issues where the local law enforcement just doesn't know what to look for."
