Defamation Claims: A Growing Risk in Social, Digital and Traditional Media
Negligent publishing and careless writing can get both journalists and publishers into trouble. In the growing age of social and digital platforms, the scope of defamation lawsuits has expanded far beyond traditional media channels, with more and more private individuals coming under the fire of disparaging statements online.
Media Attorney Sanford Bohrer said a key issue in many defamation cases is what the journalist did to determine whether a statement was true or not.
"Good reporting involves digging into the situation to see if a potentially damaging statement can be supported," Mr. Bohrer said.
