Senior Policy Advisor Norma Krayem shared her thoughts on federal bans of Chinese telecom companies for an article by Bloomberg Government. After recently banning Kaspersky Lab software, the Senate and the House of Representatives are seriously considering bills that would bar the U.S. federal government from contracting with any entity that uses equipment from any Chinese-controlled entity–specifically Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp.
According to Ms. Krayem, though Congress has expressed concern about these companies for many years, the broader concern is actually over systemic supply chain risk.
"That is a much tougher nut to crack, but it should be thoroughly discussed and vetted with the private sector as well," she recommended. "Unwinding long-standing supply chains and vendor relationships simply cannot be done overnight."
