ISAO Standards Group Discusses EU GDPR Challenges, Exemptions

Inside Cybersecurity

Senior Policy Advisor Norma Krayem participated in a webinar hosted by the Information Sharing and Analysis Organization Standards Organization (ISAO) on the impact of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

During the webinar, Ms. Krayem told participants that officials from the departments of Homeland Security and State are in talks with the EU about regulatory and law-enforcement exceptions in the "public interest" for sharing threat indicators. Inside Cybersecurity writes that she described the effort as an "ongoing dialogue" that will provide clarity "hopefully this year."

Ms. Krayem, who chairs Holland & Knight's Global Cybersecurity and Privacy Policy & Regulation team, noted that GDPR governs the use of EU residents' data by companies as well as ISAOs. She urged ISAOs to become familiar with all international requirements beyond GDPR, referring to a “global trend” in privacy controls, and recommended a “security by design” for info-sharing networks, while arguing that security and privacy are becoming increasingly intertwined.
