Senior Policy Advisor Norma Krayem commented on a newly introduced bipartisan legislation that would regulate how tech companies use consumer health data. The bill would extend many GDPR-like protections that already exist in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to the tech industry.
“HIPAA already includes certain components of what people late to the game are calling GDPR controls,” said Ms. Krayem. “I think this bill takes an important first step to look at the nexus between health and tech sectors… That’s incredibly important because HIPAA couldn’t anticipate where tech would go and regulates certain types of entities.”
