In an interview with The American Lawyer, Director of Diversity and Inclusion Yusuf Zakir discusses the need for firms to continually diversify at the risk of losing clients. Not only is there client pressure on firms to show a culture of inclusion, there is also increased emphasis on using new methods to recruit the right lawyers in 2020. Mr. Zakir discusses that this pressure is only just beginning and either firms will adapt or lose clients. He also notes that this change will probably cause law firms to change their hiring mindset.
"Traditionally at law firms, we’ve tended to think of the concept of 'fit.' I think that’s fading with time. We know that that sort of thinking leads to biased decision-making. Firms are going to move toward allowing people to be themselves in their space."
