What You Should Take into Account If You Are Asked to Lower Your Salary due to the Crisis of the Pandemic

Partner Vicente Umaña Carrizosa was interviewed by Asuntos Legales about how employees should respond if they are asked to take salary reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Colombia's Ministry of Labor issued a notice indicating that the various measures passed in response to the economic crisis do not excuse employers from fulfilling their obligations, including paying salaries. However, it is not clear if a salary reduction is permitted, nor is it clear if an employer is obligated to continue making pension contributions. Mr. Umaña Carrizosa explained that a salary reduction does not necessarily imply a pension reduction and added that each case should be analyzed individually, since payments depend on the age, accumulated time and funds of the employee.
