Partner Vicente Umaña Carrizosa was interviewed by Asuntos Legales
about how employees should respond if they are asked to take salary reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Colombia's Ministry of Labor issued a notice indicating that the various measures passed in response to the economic crisis do not excuse employers from fulfilling their obligations, including paying salaries. However, it is not clear if a salary reduction is permitted, nor is it clear if an employer is obligated to continue making pension contributions. Mr. Umaña Carrizosa explained that a salary reduction does not necessarily imply a pension reduction and added that each case should be analyzed individually, since payments depend on the age, accumulated time and funds of the employee.
