Work Week Reduction: The Unanswered Questions in LatAm with Its Adoption

Labor, Employment and Benefits attorney Jimena Nieto was interviewed by Bloomberg Línea about initiatives to reduce the work week in Latin America. This reduction aligns with recommendations from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and International Labour Organization (ILO), which seek to standardize international labor practices. Ms. Nieto pointed out that the challenges associated with implementing a shorter work week will affect small and mid-size businesses the most.

"The increase in labor costs and uncertainty about the positive effect on the profitability and productivity will make even more difficult the viability of these types of companies in Latin America, since because of their constitution they confront greater challenges in the current economic landscape," she said. "As a consequence, this measure can affect in the short term the principal source of formal employment."
