MIAMI (January 20, 2017) – Holland & Knight partner Brett Alan Barfield received The Florida Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award for 2016 during a ceremony at the Supreme Court of Florida in Tallahassee on Jan. 19.
Each year The Florida Bar honors one attorney from each judicial circuit statewide for outstanding efforts in making legal representation available to those otherwise unable to afford it. Mr. Barfield was chosen as the winner for the 11th Judicial Circuit, covering Miami-Dade County.
Mr. Barfield has led the pro bono legal services and charitable giving program in Holland & Knight’s Miami office for several years. He also leads the firm’s work in Hague Convention Parental Child Abduction cases — reuniting parents with their children through petitions in federal and state court under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. In addition to supervising the firm’s cases, he has personally litigated over 50 Hague Convention cases, mostly in Florida. In 2016, Mr. Barfield spent 383 hours performing pro bono work.
Mr. Barfield practices in the area of business litigation with an emphasis on domestic and international commercial disputes, construction litigation and commercial landlord/tenant disputes. He currently serves as the vice president of the Federal Bar Association for the 11th Circuit. He also serves on the boards of directors for Florida Foster Care Review and Read to a Child.
