PORTLAND, Ore. (August 20, 2018) – Holland & Knight Partner Allison Martin Rhodes was named president of the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers (APRL) at the organization's annual meeting earlier this month in Chicago. APRL is the premier national association for ethics lawyers. Ms. Martin Rhodes takes the helm of the organization at a critical time.
"It is a tremendous honor to serve as APRL's president at such an incredible time to be an ethics lawyer," said Ms. Martin Rhodes. "In the first days following my election, we saw the ABA make ground-breaking changes to the model rules on advertising, and I know that the momentum for modernizing the regulation of lawyers will only continue. The industry can and must focus on the future of the profession, and I am excited to support APRL in leading that discussion. This year and in the years to come, we will be talking about the sensible regulation of alternative legal services, the future of non-lawyer ownership of law firms, and the appropriate convergence of technology and the access to justice."
"Although these discussions will shape our profession for generations to come, I believe that something even more important is underway," Ms. Martin Rhodes continued. "Now is also a time when the entire country, including those far from the world of lawyer regulation, understands first-hand what ethics mean and why they are important. For the first time, our families, neighbors and friends understand why having lawyers who specialize in legal ethics is critical to our system of government, politics and justice. Not since Watergate – if even then – has the average American listened so closely to legal ethicists. I know that all APRL members intend to take that responsibility seriously, and I am delighted to provide leadership during this time."
Ms. Martin Rhodes is the co-chair of Holland & Knight's Legal Profession Team and a nationally recognized leader in the law governing the legal profession. She focuses her practice on legal ethics and risk management, law firm organization and attorney discipline defense. She advises both law firms and lawyers on ethical and fiduciary issues related to lateral hiring, law firm dissolution and expulsion matters. In that context, she represents lawyers and law firms in litigation among themselves. Ms. Martin Rhodes' practice is national in scope, and she maintains an office in the firm's Portland, Ore., and Los Angeles offices.
APRL is comprised of more than 500 lawyers, law professors and judges holding an interest in lawyers' professional responsibility, legal ethics, legal malpractice and the evolving law of lawyering, primarily through the application of the rules of lawyer ethics to the practice of law. The great majority of its members provide advice to lawyers on legal ethics issues, defend lawyers in discipline matters or civil malpractice cases, act as expert witnesses, teach professional responsibility courses in law schools or perform ethics-related functions in law firms.
