George Howell III Receives Inaugural General James B. Peake Award from Bay Area Legal Services
TAMPA, Fla. (November 8, 2018) – Holland & Knight attorney George Howell III was the recipient of the inaugural Lieutenant General James B. Peake Award given by the Bay Area Legal Services at its annual Champions for Justice event last night.
James B. Peake, who presented the honor to Mr. Howell, was the sixth United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs and is a notable humanitarian. Mr. Howell received the award for his activities supporting active duty military, veterans and their families in Hillsborough County.
Mr. Howell has spent the past three years working to establish a comprehensive program that assists veterans, active duty military members and their families in the Tampa Bay area. The program, called Mission United, was developed in partnership with the United Way Suncoast. Mr. Howell serves as the chair of its advisory council and handles pro bono legal matters for participants in the program.
Mr. Howell is also a strong advocate for Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base, where he has served for a decade in civilian leadership roles, led base improvement projects, and represented service members with legal issues on a pro bono basis.
He is the recipient of many awards for his community service, including Tampa Bay Lightning's "Community Hero Award," given last month. This recognition came with a $50,000 award from the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation, which was donated to Mission United and the Tampa Bay History Center.
At Holland & Knight, Mr. Howell concentrates primarily in the areas of banking and finance, including commercial lending transactions primarily for banks and other lending institutions, asset-based financing transactions, real estate and construction loans, as well as general real estate transactions.
