Holland & Knight Partner Peter Jarvis to Receive Professional Responsibility Award from American Bar Association
PORTLAND, Ore. (February 6, 2019) – The American Bar Association's (ABA) Center for Professional Responsibility has named Holland & Knight Partner Peter Jarvis as the 2019 recipient of its prestigious Michael Franck Professional Responsibility Award. Each year, the award recognizes one individual whose career commitments in areas such as legal ethics, disciplinary enforcement and lawyer professionalism demonstrate the best accomplishments of lawyers. It will be presented on May 30 at the 45th ABA National Conference on Professional Responsibility in Vancouver, Canada.
Mr. Jarvis is the co-chair of Holland & Knight's Legal Profession Team. He practices primarily in the area of attorney professional responsibility and risk management, advising lawyers, law firms, corporate legal departments and government legal departments about all aspects of the law governing lawyers. He is a co-author with Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr. and W. William Hodes of The Law of Lawyering, one of the country's leading professional responsibility treatises, as well as a co-author or editor of many other articles and publications including The Ethical Oregon Lawyer and the Washington State Bar Deskbook.
Mr. Jarvis has served on many state bar committees including the Oregon State Bar Ad Hoc Committee on Attorney Advertising, the Oregon State Bar Legal Ethics Committee, the Washington State Bar Committee on the Future of the Profession, the Washington State Bar Committee on Professional Ethics, the Washington State Bar Committee to Define the Practice of Law and the Washington State Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Committee. He has drafted many state bar ethics opinions, as well as language that has been included in state legal ethic rules.
In addition to his state bar service, Mr. Jarvis is a former president of the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers (APRL).
"For more than three decades, Peter's contributions to the profession have been broad and deep," said Allison Martin Rhodes, co-chair of Holland & Knight's Legal Profession Team and current APRL president. "It is not an overstatement to say that he has raised a generation of ethics lawyers, and it is from his deep generosity that we have built the team we have at the firm."
"I am truly honored to receive this award from the ABA's Center for Professional Responsibility, and I applaud its national leadership in legal and judicial ethics, professional regulation, professionalism and client protection," said Mr. Jarvis. "I am proud to have played a role, however small, in furthering this mission."
The Michael Franck Professional Responsibility Award is named in honor of Michael Franck, the late director of the State Bar of Michigan and long-time champion of improvements in lawyer regulation in the public interest.
