Michael Candes is an attorney in Holland & Knight's Orlando office and practices exclusively in the firm's Construction Industry Group. Mr. Candes represents contractors, owners and manufacturers in private and government contract matters. His practice is national and is concentrated on industrial, commercial and infrastructure projects. He has significant experience with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects, biomass projects, fossil-fueled generation facilities, slope stability and geotechnical issues, reservoirs, pipelines, processing facilities and commercial buildings. He also drafts and negotiates contracts for various construction participants and routinely assists clients with contract management strategies in an effort to avoid disputes.

Mr. Candes is Florida Bar Board Certified in Construction Law, and he is AV Rated by Martindale-Hubbell. He also dedicates a portion of his time representing pro bono clients.

Mr. Candes' representative matters include:

  • defense of claims totaling $30 million arising from the construction of a 1,000 megawatt (MW) power generation facility
  • pursuit and defense of claims totaling $29.2 million arising from the design and construction of 53.5 MW biomass power generation facility
  • prosecution of claims for a prime contractor arising out of an $81 million contract for construction of a mile-long bridge and modifications to 10.7 miles of roadway
  • defense of a prime contractor for claims of $200 million arising from the construction of a reservoir
  • representing a prime contractor in pursuit of claims totaling $45 million arising from the construction of cement processing facility
  • representing a shell subcontractor in pursuit of claims arising from the collapse of a tower crane
  • defense of a shell subcontractor in alleged defective work allegations arising from the construction of an oceanfront condominium
  • prosecution of claims in excess of $65 million on an airport renovation and expansion project
  • prosecution and defense of claims on an airport reconstruction project
