Alexa Marie J. Derkasch is an attorney in Holland & Knight's Boston office and member of the firm's Intellectual Property Group. As a registered patent attorney, Ms. Derkasch focuses her practice on patent preparation and prosecution with particular experience on matters involving computer hardware and software, data storage devices, graphical user interfaces, artificial intelligence/machine learning, mechanical devices, medical devices, electronics and electromechanical devices, adhesives and polymers, and consumer devices. She has represented a variety of clients ranging from individual inventors and startups to publicly traded companies, and is well versed in patent application drafting, patent prosecution and appeals to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board within the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Within the firm, Ms. Derkasch is a member of Holland & Knight's Blockchain Technology Team, which helps clients understand blockchain, how it may benefit their businesses and the emergence of related public policy issues.
Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Ms. Derkasch worked in-house for a Fortune 500 company where she prosecuted applications from a wide variety of technological fields, including aviation and avionics, medical devices, vehicle communication and networking systems, and computer software.
While attending law school, Ms. Derkasch supported the New Hampshire Department of Safety IT Contract Team, specifically aiding the integration of computer systems and data from state, county and municipal law enforcement entities. Ms. Derkasch also worked for a venture capital company performing critical proof-of-concept development for Fortune 500 companies to help identify patent assets that were most valuable with respect to monetization.
Ms. Derkasch has engaged in pro bono representation in a variety of matters, including assisting startup companies with securing protection of their intellectual property, assisting in the preparation and drafting of service contracts between charitable organizations and third parties, and assisting in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications for individual inventors.
Ms. Derkasch leads the firm's Boston office in the annual American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraising event. The event is designed to raise awareness about breast cancer, fund innovative research; transportation to treatment facilities; wigs and compression bras; 24/7 counselor helplines; and room and board at the many Hope Lodges around the country for patients traveling a long distance to receive care, among other vital services.
