Overview

Michael Heinlen focuses his practice on commercial litigation and appellate matters, specifically focusing on intellectual property and art law. He has significant expertise handling patent litigation matters, particularly matters involving semiconductor and mobile phone technology. Before joining Thompson & Knight, Mr. Heinlen received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University, his M.A. from the University of Cincinnati, and his B.A. in Art History from Denison University. He taught Medieval and Northern Renaissance Art History for several years at the University of North Texas and served as an art historian. In addition to his intellectual property practice, Mr. Heinlen has a robust art law practice. He is one of the founding members of Arts Counsel Texas, a nonprofit organization aimed at providing a bridge between the legal and artistic communities of North Texas.

  • Represented a hardware storage manufacturer and one of its customers in proceedings before the U.S. International Trade Commission related to bond pad technology; obtained initial and final determinations of no violation related to the bond pad patent
  • Represented a leading wireless handset manufacturer and telecommunications infrastructure-equipment company in a patent infringement lawsuit related to cellular-transmission protocols; obtained jury verdict of invalidity of all asserted patent claims; confirmed on appeal
  • Represented client in a patent infringement lawsuit related to online-purchasing software; obtained summary judgment of invalidity
  • Represented a hardware storage manufacturer and one of its customers in proceedings before the U.S. International Trade Commission related to manufacture of semiconductor devices; obtained initial and final determinations of no violation related to seven patents; confirmed on appeal
  • Represented client in a patent infringement litigation related to graphic user interfaces; obtained jury verdict of invalidity; confirmed on appeal
  • Represented client in a patent infringement lawsuit involving alarm-monitoring equipment; obtained take-nothing judgment of noninfringement; confirmed on appeal
  • Represented a software developer in a copyright-infringement action
  • Represented a law firm in legal malpractice litigation related to patent prosecution
  • Represented a major U.S. transportation firm in an insurance coverage dispute over claims arising from the 9/11 disaster
  • Represented an international food manufacturer for business interruption after one of the largest food recalls in U.S. history
  • Represented collector in acquisition of significant artwork
  • Represented collector in assignment of important works to the Dallas Museum of Art
  • Represented artist in copyright dispute with major hotel chain
