Overview

Maria T. Currier is a partner and co-chair of Holland & Knight's National Healthcare Practice. She also is a co-leader of the firm's Healthcare & Life Sciences Industry Team. She has more than 34 years of experience serving clients in the healthcare industry and is Board Certified in Health Law as recognized by The Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization and Education. Her healthcare practice focuses on health reform matters, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, commercial transactions, healthcare regulatory matters, fraud and abuse, managed care and international business ventures for healthcare clients.

Ms. Currier has counseled clients on: clinical integration; federal healthcare reform; new delivery models, including ACOs; Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement and regulatory issues; patient safety and quality initiatives; HIPAA; federal and state fraud and abuse matters; Stark-related matters; corporate compliance plans; false claims act compliance; and physician incentive arrangements. She has served as counsel to hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care providers, home health companies, large medical groups, ambulatory surgery centers, integrated health systems, provider sponsored organizations, health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, physician-hospital organizations, physician management companies, pharmaceutical companies, employer self-insured plans, prepaid health plans, Medicare Advantage Plans, national diagnostic companies, post acute care providers, skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and academic medical centers.

Relevant Experience

  • Advises national healthcare REITs on healthcare regulatory matters involving senior housing and skilled nursing investments
  • Represents multi-hospital system, advising on health reform and national physician clinical integration strategies
  • Handles acquisitions and sales of physician practices, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, clinical laboratories, pharmacies and other healthcare providers
  • Counsels clients on federal and Florida fraud and abuse, Stark-related matters, corporate compliance plans, false claims act compliance and physician incentive arrangements
  • Serves as special regulatory and international counsel for a large South Florida hospital system
  • Serves as outside general counsel for the South Florida Hospital & Healthcare Association
  • Counsels largest national provider of workers compensation services with multistate regulatory issues
  • Counsel for national physician management company for state managed care and general healthcare matters
  • Represents several Medicare Advantage plans with state and federal compliance matters and provider contracting
  • Experienced in federal and state laws governing clinical trials and IRBs
  • Represents academic medical centers with technology transfer, affiliation agreements and HIPAA privacy and security regulation compliance
  • Represented the Puerto Rico Department of Health in Medicare and Medicaid regulatory matters
  • Represented large distributor of medical supplies and equipment to establish foreign operations in Latin America
  • Represented U.S. healthcare technology companies in establishing distribution and sales agreements throughout Latin America
